Your travel questions answered

The world can be a big and busy place, tough to understand.

But not here with 5 Days, we travel in small groups, making our tours flexible, relaxed and generous with your time. Take a peek through these tour questions to get you up to speed with what we do.

GENERAL INFO

Whats included in my ticket?

The cost of your tour includes transport, driver-guide and accommodation with most meals and activities included. However, we recommend you check what is included in each tour on our Tours page.

What do I need to bring with me?

  • Passport (for international travellers)
  • Travel Insurance (especially important for international travellers)
  • Bank/debit/credit card and local currency.
  • Travel Injections/vaccinations.  While there are no specific requirements for vaccinations when travelling in New Zealand, it’s worth making sure you are up to date with all the standard medical vaccinations.  Check with your doctor before leaving home.
  • A soft bag.  A sturdy backpack or duffle bag will work better than a suitcase, which is cumbersome and difficult to store in the vehicle.  It’s worth keeping in mind that there may be stairs at some of our accommodation.
  • Clothing. Summer in New Zealand can range in temperature. Pack your togs (that’s the local lingo for board shorts or a bikini) for swimming, layered clothing for warmth (a light merino or similar base layer) and a light rain jacket for wet weather days.  Expect chilly (cold) temperatures in winter, particularly the further south you go.  A warm jacket is essential for any winter journeys.  For further information on New Zealand’s climate, check out the climate question below.
  • Sunscreen.  An essential item in New Zealand.  Due to a thin ozone layer, New Zealand’s sun is extremely harsh.  You will need to make sure you’re protected with sunscreen and a hat.
  • Walking/trainer shoes.  Make sure you’re comfortable for any hiking or walking.
  • Evening wear.  No need to pack your formal wear, New Zealand is fairly relaxed.  In the summer and at beach or lake destinations, shorts and jandals (thongs/flip flops) are acceptable.  A collared shirt and jeans for men or smart casual for women will be fine in just about any situation.
  • Camera/GoPro.  We promise there will be amazing travel moments to capture.  You may want to send your favourite pic to us at 5 Days to enter the monthly photo competition.
  • Insect repellant for the pesky but harmless sandfly

How many people will be on our tour?

In most cases, our tours cater to a maximum of 12 people including your driver-guide.

Are there age limits?

We have no age limits on our tours. However, many of the experiences have been designed for those over the age of 18. Our winery tours include wine tasting and there are sometimes age or height restrictions on activities. If you are a family group and would like to enquire about a custom made itinerary, contact us today.

How do I get from the airport to the city?

We can provide an airport transfer service for an additional cost. Please refer to our airport transfer section.

We are travelling with a group of friends, can we book the bus for ourselves?

Yes you can, however depending on numbers there maybe a premium incurred - please enquire further with our team.

We are a bunch of Kiwi's (New Zealanders) travelling togther.  Will other people be on our tour?

Yes there could well be.  This is a dynamic we encourage.  Kiwi's and internationals travelling together!  Imagine the possibilities.  Your new friends invite you to their holiday home in the South of France or maybe you invite them back to your own farm house in another area of New Zealand and share with them your slice of heaven.

What if I’m travelling on my own?

No problem, we have accommodation options for solo travellers. Each 5 Days tour is full of handpicked experiences, so we’re pretty sure you’ll enjoy the company of like-minded people and come away with new friends. You’ll be glad you made the decision to take a solo journey.

Im a single traveller, will I be charged a single supplement?

This is entirely up to you.  We have single fare options available.  If you would prefer to save on costs, we can organise a twin share room with another compatible single traveller if possible.

Can I change my departure date?

Yes you can. However, a cancellation policy will apply. Please refer to our Terms and Conditions for further information.

Can I join a tour late or leave it early?

It’s extremely difficult (if not impossible) to join a tour after it has departed.  However, it is possible to leave a tour early. Please be aware you will be responsible for your own arrangements from the moment you leave the tour, including any costs incurred.

What can we do to keep New Zealand tidy while travelling around?

We love our country and its pristine landscapes. The Keep New Zealand Beautiful website offers all the information you need to know on why it’s so important to keep it this way.

EXTRAS

What are the additional costs?

Very little. Most costs are covered in your tour including transport, accommodation and most meals. You’ll need to pay extra for some of the optional activities like Whale Watching or Jet boating. Check out our Tours page to see what’s included in each journey.

How do I book optional activities?

Talk to us!  We have great relationships with our network of carefully selected activity operators. On most tours, 5 Days clients have spaces held for them, which is very handy in the high season! Activities can be booked through your driver-guide.

We want to do design our own tour.  Can you help us?

We certainly can. Our Travel Services Team are New Zealand experts and would love to help design a custom made tour to suit your interests. Make sure you get in touch well in advance as it can be difficult to book accommodation during high seasons.

ACCOMMODATION

What is the standard of accommodation?

5 Days tours include accommodation at 4.5 to 5 star Qualmark rated properties. In a few smaller destinations, there is a lack of accommodation but we always use the best available.

Can you provide me with a list of the accommodation providers we will be staying at?

Yes, these are included in your final itinerary document. Due to availability, it is possible that accommodation can change.

Is accommodation provided for the night before the tour, when we arrive?

No, it isn’t. We recommend you book your accommodation in advance or speak to us so that we can organise it for you. If you would like us to organise a sightseeing experience, get in touch with our Travel Services Team today.

MONEY

Whats the exchange rate like?

To check the latest NZD exchange rate use the Google currency converter.

Cash or electronic payment?

Cash is accepted everywhere and all major credit/debit cards are also widely accepted.

How much money will I need each day?

This will depend on which tour you book. Our Travel Services team are happy to advise you once you’ve made a booking.

Can we pay in our own currency?

You have the option to use the main currencies on the booking page.

Is tipping included?  If it is, how much should I budget?

Tips are not included. We believe a huge smile from you is the only tip we need. But, of course, if you feel you have experienced excellent service (and only excellent service), tips of any nature are gratefully received.

CLIMATE, TERRAIN & FITNESS

What is the New Zealand climate like?

For an overview of New Zealand’s climate throughout the year, go the the NIWA website.
For the most accurate weather forecast while travelling around New Zealand, refer to the Metservice website.

What is New Zealands terrain like?

The stunning diversity of New Zealand’s landscapes is what makes it such an incredible destination. In one 5 Days tour you could see snow, sea and rainforest.

How long are the walks?

We like to refer to our walks as “holiday exercise”. So we keep them to no more than one and a half hours in duration, and all walks are easy to moderate in nature.

What fitness level is required?

A moderate fitness level is required for our walks. If you have no problem walking over undulating tracks for up to an hour, you will be fine to participate in the walks. Some tours also offer cycle options so be sure to check with our Travel Services Team on cycle activities.

After we do a tour with 5 Days, we would like to hike some of New Zealand's amazing bush walks.  What do we need to know to prepare?

Never underestimate the highly changeable nature of New Zealand’s weather, especially in mountainous areas. Please refer to the Department of Conservation (DOC) website for everything you need to know. Whether you are preparing for one of New Zealand’s Great Walks, or a short day hike, we recommend checking this website first.

SAFETY

Is New Zealand safe?

New Zealand is one of the safest travel destinations in the world, with a low crime rate, no war threat, few endemic diseases and an excellent healthcare system. However, we recommend you observe the same precautions with your personal safety and possessions, as you would while travelling in any country or at home. Make sure your travel insurance covers any eventuality and always respect the local laws. If you have an incident while travelling, notify your 5 Days driver-guide immediately. For information on New Zealand laws or help with any police matters, visit the New Zealand Police website.

What is the standard of the vehicles?

We use the latest model Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Mini-Vans. For that special occasion we also have “The Bullet V2”, a 2009 Mercedes-Benz E class sedan if you’d prefer a bit of old-school luxury.

Does New Zealand have any dangerous animals?

Unless you get between a dairy cow and her calf, you are safe anywhere on land. In the ocean, there are a number of dangerous creatures such as sharks, jellyfish and stingrays. Your driver-guide will advise you where it is safe to swim.
